SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.28 g, 7 h), circa 480-478. Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left, driving slow quadriga to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses with a wreath. Rev. ΣVRΑ-Κ-ΟΣΙ-ΟΝ Pearl-diademed head of Arethousa to right, her hair drawn up at the back, wearing plain necklace and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right; all within circular incuse. Boehringer 57 (V30/R28). De Luynes 1153 (same dies). HGC 2, 1306. McClean 2603 and pl. 89, 12 (same dies). Randazzo 240-1 (same dies). SNG ANS 13 (same dies). Beautifully toned and with a lovely head of Arethousa. Minor marks and the obverse struck from a somewhat worn die, otherwise, good very fine.
